High Resolution Sediment Dynamics in Salt-wedge Estuaries

چکیده
The Fraser and Columbia River estuaries switch between two extremes of mixing on very small horizontal scales; over as little as tens of meters, conditions can vary between that of a highly stratified estuary and a well-mixed river. Over this transition, suspended particulate matter concentration (C) and settling rates (Ws) can also rapidly change. Understanding the sedimentological processes that occur within the transition zone requires measurements of sediment properties and transport on the same time and space scales as is now possible for physical oceanographic properties.

Modeling and understanding turbulent mixing in a macrotidal salt wedge estuary
[1] A high‐resolution three‐dimensional numerical simulation is performed with the parallel, unstructured grid SUNTANS model to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of turbulent mixing in a shallow, macrotidal salt wedge estuary that experiences periodic mixing and strong stratification. Unresolved vertical mixing is parameterized with the k − kl closure scheme with the Canuto‐A stability function...
متن کاملApplication of TELEMAC-2D and SISYPHE to complex estuarine regions to inform future management decisions
Complex, high resolution, finite-element TELEMAC-2D grids have been developed to simulate ocean/fluvial interaction in three shallow, intensively managed Welsh estuaries. In each case, important ecosystems and developed areas are exposed to flooding from both tidal and fluvial events. Of particular concern is how the estuaries will be affected by future sea-level rise due to climate change, and...
متن کاملPrimary production in estuarine oxic/anoxic interfaces: contribution of microbial dark CO2 fixation in the Ebro River Salt Wedge Estuary
The present study assesses the contribution of dark carbon fixation to the primary production in the oxic/anoxic interface of a shallow estuarine environment that develops a salt-water wedge with the presence of sulfide. Primary production was partitioned into oxygenic photosynthesis, anoxygenic photosynthesis and dark fixation. The results show the importance of dark fixation in the oxic/anoxi...
متن کاملDynamics of the turbidity maximum zone in a micro-tidal estuary: Hawkesbury River, Australia
Bed sediment, velocity and turbidity data are presented from a large (145 km long), generally well-mixed, micro-tidal estuary in south-eastern Australia. The percentage of mud in the bed sediments reaches a maximum in a relatively narrow zone centred 30±40 km from the estuary mouth. Regular tidal resuspension of these bed sediments produces a turbidity maximum (TM) zone in the same location. Th...
متن کاملEstuarine Suspended Sediment Dynamics: Observations Derived from over a Decade of Satellite Data
Suspended sediment dynamics of Corpus Christi Bay, Texas, USA, a shallow-water wind-driven estuary, were investigated by combining field and satellite measurements of total suspended solids (TSS). An algorithm was developed to transform 500-mModerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua satellite reflectance data into estimated TSS values. The algorithm was developed using a reflec...
